SAUS

Ortega is a part of the SAUS Coalition - Save Austin Urban Schools, which is fighting diligently to keep ALL our AISD schools open. This group was formed recently after the news of potential School Closures - in January.


1. 3 Meetings that happened last week
- Coalition SAUS will be meeting with Dr. Carstarphen at Space12.  We ask each school to send 2-3 reps only.  Please contact your school rep if you have questions.  
- Austin Interfaith is having a large housemeeting of all its south and central Austin members and south Austin schools to discuss the proposed closure of 13 neighborhood schools in Austin.  The meeting will be at the Travis Heights Elementary School cafeteria (2010 Alameda Drive) this Wednesday, February 9th at 6 pm.  
- Bradley Meeting - concerning state wide efforts and AISD budget presentation.  Tomorrow's meeting is in the theatre of the Carver Multicultural Center adjacent to the library, 6:00 pm. I asked Nicole Conley-Abrahms to share the facts about our budget crisis without the sensationalism of the media.
- Our normal Coalition SAUS meeting will reconvene  2/16 at Space12


2.Helpful resources
  1. Postcard for Legislators - print it out for your parents and kids to send out
  2. Austin American Statesman is collecting and posting letters from students.  Please encourage students to write what they feel and submit tonie@statesman.com.  There is a blog page with all the stories submitted: http://austinnie.wordpress.com/aisd-school-closures/
  3. We have banners available for each school in english and spanish. 

3. Letters need approval from school reps.  
We will send them to school reps this week, please approve by end of the week so we can start sending them out on behalf of the Coalition.
We're making good progress on communication:
1) Op-ed in the paper - from Dierdre
2) Flyer for neighborhood churches, businesses, etc. 
  

4. One big component to our efforts to save the schools requires us to get involved with influencing our state legislators and Perry.  There is a state-wide rally planned for March 12th to bring our efforts on the state/national platform.  Go to www.savetxschools.org for more info.  If you want to get involved on behalf of the Coalition or your respective school, please contact Sam Lee


5. Coalition SAUS mtg Wed, 2/16 is at Space12 from 6-8pm with Dr. Paul Cruz, AISD's Chief Schools Officer
